Why Your Client's Links Are Not Moving Rankings

May 5, 2025

"We built 20 links and nothing moved" is one of the most common complaints in SEO, and almost never because 20 links wasn't enough. It's usually because the 20 links didn't actually count for much.

Domain Rating Without Relevance Is Just a Number

A DR 70 site in a completely unrelated niche passes less real value than a DR 45 site your client's audience would genuinely read. Google's systems weigh relevance heavily, a link that makes contextual sense does more work than a high-authority link that looks out of place.

Fake Traffic Sites Are Everywhere

Plenty of sites sold as "high DR" have little to no real organic audience, DR is a third-party metric, not a Google signal, and it can be inflated. A link on a site with no actual traffic behind it is close to worthless, no matter what the number says.

The Fix: Relevance First, Authority Second

On a campaign that took a scheduling software client from DR 58 to DR 64, the approach was to only consider websites in the client's own niche and close neighbours, small business, wellness, service industries. Then filter for real traffic and authority within that set. Visible growth showed up within three months, not because of link volume, but because every link made contextual sense.

If your client's links aren't moving anything, the first question isn't "how many more do we need." It's "were the ones we already have actually relevant."
